River Cruising: It’s Not Just for Old People

A few years ago, my mom, aunt and I started talking about taking a river cruise. I was unfamiliar with river cruising and didn’t have many pre-conceived notions about it at the time. Basically, I thought it seemed like a great way to see a lot of places that didn’t require me getting behind the wheel of a car in a foreign land – which undoubtedly would end up with us either in jail or lost forever.

However, as I began doing online research of a few different river cruise companies, I noticed that all of the pictures on the websites featured the same type of people: old.

While they all appeared to be enjoying themselves tremendously, they were at least two or three decades beyond my years. Then I read about the “Gentle Walking” tour options and availability of walking sticks (in my mind, walking stick = cane), and I started to wonder if I would have to eat dinner at 4:30 every day. But I had already fallen in love with the idea of a Danube River Cruise, and since I was nearing the big 4-0 at the time, I figured, what the hell…at least I’d be the youngest person around for a change!

We ended up selecting Viking River Cruises and did the 8-day Romantic Danube cruise with a pre-trip extension in Prague, and stayed an extra day post-trip in Budapest on our own. I’m so glad I wasn’t dissuaded by my initial trepidation, because we ended up having a fantastic time and saw things we couldn’t have seen if we traveled any other way. Happily, there was no Early Bird Special dining, and I was, indeed, the youngest passenger on board.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be doing a series of posts about the different places the cruise took us, but I’ll start today with a review of our ship and our overall experience with Viking River Cruises.

The Ship

Our ship was the Viking Prestige, which was built in 2011, and we took our cruise that same year in September. The ship was clean, comfortable and well-laid out. We stayed in French balcony staterooms on the middle deck (rooms 238 and 239 – note that 239 is a single.) Each room on the middle and upper decks have French balconies with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors.

Staterooms

The rooms are 170 square feet, but didn’t feel overly-crowded. There was a long desk area at the foot of the beds in the picture below, that offered plenty of electrical outlets, both 115-volt and 220-volt. The bathrooms were decent sized and the shower stall was roomier than I expected. The closet area got pretty packed with clothes for both my mom and I, but it worked out okay. Each room had a flat-panel TV with plenty of channels to choose from as well as movies on demand. I think we only turned it on once during our trip, though. I did make good use of the free wi-fi, however, which worked quite well and was only briefly unavailable a few times.

I think Viking gets a bad rap sometimes, though maybe not so much anymore since they were voted top river cruise company by Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler and Cruise Critic in 2014. Their ships might not be as posh or fancy as some other cruise lines, but honestly, that suits me just fine. We went on a Uniworld cruise in 2013 (Venice and Po River) and while the décor was fancier and it gave the illusion of being a higher-quality cruise line, I liked the Viking Cruise much better (for reasons I will share with you in future posts).
The maximum amount of guests allowed on the Prestige is 188, and though I don’t remember the exact number, I know we were below that. At meal times, it was never too crowded, although if you wanted a seat by the windows in the lounge for cocktail hour or for special presentations, you had to get there early.

Onboard Dining

Meals onboard were very good. They tailored each menu to fit the country we happened to be in at the time. The food was presented beautifully and tasted great.

Viking Staff

The staff on board was friendly and helpful. Our cruise director (named Marek) was simply outstanding and you could tell that he really cared about the passengers. He took the time to talk to everyone and participated in most (if not all) of the special presentations done onboard. During shore excursions, he was always there coordinating and making sure things went smoothly. I still fondly remember his voice coming over the speakers every morning saying “A wonderful good morning to you, ladies and gentlemen.” Silly as it sounds, it made me smile every time.

Below is a picture of Marek and another member of the staff that performed a wonderful traditional Hungarian music and dance show. On another day, Marek gave a very moving and informative talk about growing up in Communist Slovakia. If you ever take a cruise and he is the director, you are in for a truly wonderful experience!

The rest of the staff was great, as well. On our first night at dinner, we had a waiter that we immediately fell in love with (Milos) and made sure to sit in his area from then on. He was funny, attentive and very nice.

My aunt started off in room 239, which, as I mentioned above, was a single room. The position of both our rooms was near the engines. When booking our rooms, we were assured that the new hybrid engines were very quiet. While they didn’t bother my mom and I at all, my aunt was unable to sleep due to the noise they (or some other bit of machinery) made. When she complained to the concierge, the hotel manager, Klaus, and the engineer immediately came to her room to see what the problem was. After some discussion, they moved her to another room, which was a double. They also gave her a voucher to use on a future Viking cruise. This high-level of service and customer-focus was what we experienced from the entire staff on Viking (not so with Uniworld).

They were all friendly and fun, as evidenced by Klaus (on the right) and another staff member during a cookout they had one afternoon on the top deck.

Shore Excursions

Shore excursions were very well-organized and enjoyable. When buses were needed, they were comfortable and never too crowded. While I don’t really love walking around in groups like a bunch of sheep being herded from place to place, following a person holding up a big sign or flag…being on these tours with a knowledgeable guide really gives you more interesting and in-depth information about the place you’re visiting.

The wireless earpieces they provided worked very well and allowed you to wander a bit a way from the group and still hear what the guide was saying. All of the guides were locals and did a great job.

Additional Ship Info

Another thing I enjoyed about Viking is that for each city we stopped in, there would be a table set up in the atrium area with local specialty items to purchase. In Germany, among other things, they had stuffed bears dressed in lederhosen that yodel when you squeeze them (yes, I bought one and I am not ashamed of it). In Austria, there was peach schnapps and peach-scented candles (bought them both). In other places there were things like hand-painted silk scarves and hand-crafted jewelry (okay, okay…I bought those things, too. I just can’t help myself.)

Right outside the lounge, there was coffee, tea and cappuccino available at all times. At the bow of the ship, there was an open-air (but covered) area called the Aquavit Terrace, which was perfect place to have a more casual, buffet-style lunch or to just sit outside with a drink on a nice evening.

There were several hand sanitizer stations set up around the ship and every area was always spotlessly clean.

What Didn’t I Like?

Was there anything I didn’t enjoy about the cruise? Yes…three things. However, they are minor issues, and the last two are things that other people actually enjoy the most about river cruising (I never claimed not to be weird).
  • Limited time: Due to the nature of river cruising, you often don’t have a lot of time in the places you visit. Sometimes that was okay, but other times I really wished we could have stayed longer to explore on our own.
  • Group tours: As mentioned previously, when visiting a place, I don’t like being in an organized group that has to follow along and be on someone else’s schedule. That being said, I supposed you actually don’t have to take part in the groups and could go off on your own (which we did have time to do as well in most places), but then you might miss out on some good information or things you might not see otherwise.
  • Sitting with people I don’t know at meal times: I realize this makes me sound very anti-social, but I’m not (well, maybe a little). I just don’t like being forced to have conversations with people if I don’t want to. (My mom is the same, but my aunt will talk to anybody. Fortunately, she can carry the conversations for us.) Plus, as you have undoubtedly figured out by now, I love food. When I’m eating, I want to enjoy my meal and not feel like I have to make interesting small talk or listen to other people make (sometimes uninteresting) small talk. On this particular ship, they didn’t have tables in the dining room for less than six people. So no matter how unwelcoming I tried to make myself look, most of the time people would sit at the table with us and want to become our lifelong pals. Although everyone we met was really very nice, I just wanted to relax and eat. Apparently, I either have to work on my mean facial expressions or just learn to be more of a people-lover (I vote for the former).

    In Conclusion

Even though I was the youngest passenger on this cruise, river cruising is absolutely not just for senior citizens. There were plenty of people that looked to be in their 50s and maybe even late 40s. I do think, however, that young children would be out of place, at least on this particular river cruise (and there are age restrictions imposed by some of the cruise companies, so it’s sometimes not even an option). River cruising is a convenient and fun way to easily visit many different cities/countries, see some amazing scenery as you are traveling from place to place…and you only have to unpack once! There are many different activities offered that adults of any age can enjoy.
If you want to take a river cruise with clean and comfortable accomodations, attentive and down-to-earth onboard staff, good food and well-organized excursions – I highly recommend Viking. When we take our next river cruise (and there will be a next one!), we will go back to Viking.
Are any of you fans of river cruising? If so, what cruise line were you on and what was your experience like? Sound off in the comments below!
In my next post, I will talk about our pre-trip extension in Prague, which is an amazing and beautiful city that we really enjoyed.

My sister and I are going on a river cruise this summer and were only a little worried about being the youngest on the ship (we're 29 and 30). Thanks for your honest review!

Hi Wesley and thanks for your comment! You and your sister will have a great time…river cruising is definitely becoming more popular with people of all ages. When we went on our Venice and Po River Cruise, there were a couple of families with "children" that looked to be in their early to mid-20s. There is so much to see and do that it won't matter even if you are the two youngest guests…and you will at least have each other! Hope you have a wonderful time – stop back here and let me know how it goes! 🙂

Hahaha…I'm the same way with counting down days! Where are you headed? What company are you cruising with?

We will be with Viking on their Elegant Elbe tour! We get one of the shiny new ships and I'm mighty excited for it! I thought of a follow up question for you. was there anything that looking back you wish you had packed? We're worried that we're forgetting something obvious in our packing!

I'm so jealous – their new ships look amazing! That's a really good question and I had to think about it for a minute, but I do remember wishing that I had packed a skirt/dress for the Captain's Farewell Dinner (I think that's what it was called). Every other night was very casual and you could even wear whatever you were wearing during the day, but the farewell dinner was a bit dressier. I did wear nicer pants and top, but I wish I had gone one step further with a dress or skirt.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you come up with any other questions! At the very least, I hope you'll stop by when you are back from your trip and let me know how it went! 🙂

Got back from the trip last week and had a great time! Even if we had a little bit of water trouble. The Elbe is a fickle mistress! Thanks again for all the advice, it was helpful! If you're curious I'm doing/just finishing a week long recap on my blog. http://www.libraryeducated.blogspot.com
